Sugar Rush

Ugh! So many sweets and we haven't even hit Halloween yet *sigh* We've had a weekend full of birthday cakes for a niece and nephew, followed up by something sweet I cooked up on Sunday afternoon, ate the leftovers of that Monday and then attended a halloween party last night! I'm done! No sugary goodness for me today and then on Halloween I KNOW I will sneak a little here and there. *wink* But then I will probably be regretting it again like I am right now.

So what do you do about the sugar overload?? I want my kids to have fun on Halloween and we have always trick or treated but I really don't like all the candy they come home with that I have to deal with every moment of the day. "Can I have another piece?" "I want more candy." And the fits, whining and highs and lows they go through. No thanks! anyone else go through the same battles??

do you limit how much they get each day? Do you throw some of it out? Do you just let them have at it and when it's gone it's gone??? HELP!!!! I'd love to hear your advice!

wellllllll.....lets just say that my hubs is a wee bit of a teeth FREAK! LOL So this is a big one for us. We actually let Liv (she's 4) pick out her very favorite treats to keep. Then we *buy* the rest of it from her for 5 cents a piece. She's been saving up for a new barbie so I'm hoping the candy money will push her over the edge and she'll be able to get it. :) HTH!! Good luck with your sugar buzzzzzzz.

We just let them go at it. with 3 kids, hubby and I the candy really doesnt last that long lol... plus we do the harvest celebration at church which gives out alot of nick nack toys so even though we have a lot of candy it isnt like we have bags of it. My kids arent hyper by candy and as long as they brush before bed its no biggy. Plus, with all of us plus sharing with friends the candy is usually gone in about a week....so, its not a huge thing.

Just passing along another great idea that my cousin does. Here is what she said: "Here is an idea for Halloween. The Great pumkin comes to our house. The kids pick out of few of their favorite treats from their buckets, then they leave the rest for the Great pumpkin. The pumpkin comes adn takes all the candy adn then leaves a small toy. Small enough to fit in the bucket. The candy is what makes the great pumpkin so big. He just rolls down the street, and eats all the candy he finds. We make it a choice at our house. Candy or Great pumpkin. Gratefully they choose to give the candy away. And, some times, we take a stash before the pumpkin comes. No more than a handful."

As a family, we go through all of the candy. We let the kids have the chocolate candy and "give away" the hard sugary sweet candy. Our local dentist "buy's back" the candy for a dollar a pound!

Since all the school stuff is done before Halloween, we use that candy as part of our give away the night of. Then what she brings home she gets two a day (which equals out to about 4 a day since there is both mom and dad to ask). We also keep it on a high shelf in the cupboard, out of sight out of mind. After about a week she has forgoten about it.

a lot of local dentists around here buy candy by the pound, too. usually $1/lb. then the send it to the troops. ("treats for troops")
and i remember reading somewhere that it's better for the teeth to just let them have at it for one sitting....then be done with it. because it's not how much sugar is there per sitting, but rather how often they are exposed to it.
our kids get to pick 2 things a day. they usually forget within a couple days! =)
